Design Direction: How to Pull Off Jewel Tones

byTeam GM

We’ve had our eyes peeled for the biggest décor trends in 2018 even before the calendar year started, and today we’re spotlighting one that has been on our radar for some time now—jewel tones. While we love all things light and bright when it comes to our décor, we have to admit we have a soft spot for those rich, gem-inspired colors and the depth they bring to a space. Neutrals will always be classic, and pops of familiar color will always be refreshing, but it’s those jewel tones that are really stealing our hearts right now.

Stick with us and you’ll find that those attention-grabbing hues may even have a softer side than you think… We’re sharing a few tips to pulling off this trend below, so keep that page scrolling and make sure to stay tuned until the end to shop our jewel-toned décor picks. (Because who doesn’t love a little shopping?) Ready? Let’s go!

Go bold or go home.

When it comes to incorporating jewel tones into your décor, there’s no room to be shy or conservative with color. Now, that doesn’t mean you have to go floor-to-ceiling with your color, but don’t be afraid to incorporate a truly bold, or large-scale piece into your décor that’s dressed in a heart stopping jewel tone. If your décor is mostly neutral, don’t just add a jewel-toned vase or small side table—commit to something that will really steal the show, like a couch or rug in a rich, vibrant color to anchor your design and make your color selection look intentional. Or, if floor-to-ceiling is your thing, pick out a daring paint color inspired by your favorite jewel tone and let the walls do the talking.

Remember that not all jewel tones are deep colors.

When most people think of “jewel tones” the immediate colors that come to mind are probably the ones on the deeper end of the spectrum, such as emerald green, sapphire blue, and daring magenta. While these colors certainly fall into the category of jewel tones, there are so many more options to choose from than meet the eye. If you think of jewel tones in their most basic form—as the colors of natural jewels and gems—then you’re suddenly introduced to a wide range of colors from soft amethyst, to warm citrine. That being said, if you’re not into deep-colored jewel tones, don’t get scared off just yet! You can totally opt for softer tones like light turquoise, aqua, or jade. We promise they’ll still pack a punch.

Refer to the trusty color wheel.

Especially when mixing multiple jewel-toned pieces together in one space, you’ll want to get acquainted with your classic color wheel first. Consider this your lesson in Color Theory 101: Stick to an analogous color scheme (any three colors side-by-side on the tertiary color wheel), complementary colors (colors across from each other on the color wheel), or go monochromatic with different shades of one jewel tone for a majorly show-stopping space. If you want to get really into color harmony, then flip through Pantone’s guide before you get started.

Be mindful of fabrics and textures.

When it comes to a color palette that involves vibrant jewel tones, the fabric you choose can make or break your décor. For instance, picking out furniture in a decadent fabric like velvet or silk will make your jewel-toned pieces shine (literally) and look even more luxurious, while other fibers can make your colors look dull. (Did we mention we love a good jewel tone paired with brass accents? ‘Cause we do.) But make sure you have a mix of fabrics and textures throughout your space—too many pieces in the same textile can make your design look stiff and unbalanced.
