A Coastal Retreat: The Perfect Upstairs Guest Oasis

When designing the Upstairs Guest Bedroom and Bathroom in The Getaway House, I wanted to create a space that embodies both luxury and comfort—where guests feel like they’ve escaped to a serene, coastal paradise. As someone who finds beauty in the intersection of art, design, and the world around us, this space is a true reflection of that philosophy. Let me take you on a little tour of this serene hideaway.

The Guest Room: A Breezy Coastal Dream

Walking into the guest bedroom, you’re immediately greeted by the fresh, airy vibe that permeates the space. The centerpiece, of course, is the bed— with sheets by Biscuit Home. There’s something about their patterns that feels both modern and timeless, bringing a touch of playful elegance to the room.

The bed itself has a stunning custom headboard with the Poppy Block print from Schumacher x Molly Mahon, with matching curtains that gracefully frame the French doors. These doors open up to a breathtaking ocean breeze—an instant invitation to unwind. The extended bedframe and curtains feature a pattern that plays with color and contrast, creating a dance of blues and yellows that mirror the sea beyond.

Flanking the bed are the perfect pop of color in the form of blue bedside tables, a nod to the endless horizon outside. They’re practical yet stylish, the ideal spot to place a good book or morning coffee as the sunlight pours in.

The Guest Bathroom: A Bright and Serene Sanctuary

Just a few steps away, the guest bathroom continues the theme of relaxed elegance. It’s a space that marries function with beauty, creating an environment that’s both refreshing and inviting.

The Jack and Jill sinks, complete with brass fittings by Rejuvenation, add a touch of classic charm to the room. Wicker and marble accents from Williams Sonoma are introduced throughout the bathroom bring in tactile elements that soften the overall aesthetic.

Diane James Home florals are artfully placed, bringing life and a touch of nature indoors. There’s something about having flowers around that just elevates a space, don’t you think?

I had to include some of my favorite prints in the bathroom:

Afternoon Croquet, Parker Palm Springs

Hole 10 Pebble Beach Golf Links

Tennis Match, Parker Palm Springs

Of course, the bathtub is the star of the show. It’s the perfect spot for a long soak after a day spent in the sun. Weezie towels hang on a beautifully designed hook nearby, ready to envelop you in plush comfort. The Rejuvenation fixtures add a sleek, modern touch, with their clean lines and understated elegance.

The marble detailing is kept nice and bright, thanks to white tiles and walls that reflect the abundant natural light. The bathroom’s floor features blue and white striped pebble tiles, a subtle nod to the nautical theme without being overt. It’s these small details that really pull the space together.

And because no luxurious bathroom is complete without a few indulgences, I’ve stocked the shower with goop Glow products. They’re perfect for giving your skin that sun-kissed glow, even if you’ve spent the day inside. A kids’ Weezie robe is also on hand—because let’s be honest, there’s nothing cuter than a little one wrapped in softness after a bath.

This upstairs guest oasis is a space that I hope will leave guests feeling rejuvenated, relaxed, and inspired. It’s a little slice of coastal heaven, designed with love and an eye for the details that make all the difference.
