Mother’s Day with My Biggest Fan — My Mom

Hi Everyone!

As Mother’s Day approaches, I wanted to do something a little different this year—something that brings you a little closer into my world, and the people who helped shape it. Specifically, the woman who has supported me from the very beginning—my mom.

From the earliest moments of my creative journey to the wild ride of building a photography brand, she has always been there. For this special Mother’s Day feature, we turned the tables and asked her a few questions—about art, family, travel, and our most meaningful memories together. Her answers brought the biggest smile to my face, and I’m so excited to share them with you!

What’s your favorite image Gray has ever created and why?
“Probably Prada Marfa Two Cowboys—and really the whole series. We were so involved and assisted at that shoot. It’s what started his career, and we were there, witnessing it all.”

This one really hits home for me. That shoot was such a defining moment at the very start of my career. My parents were so helpful, and they were present as I captured something that would become the foundation of it all. It means the world that this moment stands out for my mom, too.

Was there a moment when you first realized Gray was an artist at heart?
“When he wrapped the backyard in string like Christo, when he was about seven or eight.”

Yes, that happened! One day, I grabbed all the string I could find and turned our backyard into my own little installation!

Can you remember a family vacation or moment that you think inspired his love of travel?
“Maybe Kauai or Paris!”

Both destinations were incredibly formative for me. Those early family trips planted seeds that have grown into a deep love for exploring the world.

What’s one thing you’ve learned from Gray over the years?
“Never doubt that people can achieve their dreams, no matter the odds.”

Reading this means the world to me. If I’ve taught her even a fraction of what she’s taught me, I feel lucky!

How do you display his work in your own home?
“We have two medium-size prints prominently displayed in our living room and kitchen. I had them framed floating, with a white mat and white frame. The result is that it gives both a very important presence in each room. We have other small ones scattered around our house, framed in the Gray Malin frames.”

My mom has such a beautiful eye—she’s always created a warm and welcoming space. The fact that she’s chosen to showcase my work as part of that makes me incredibly proud.

What’s your favorite memory you’ve shared together as mother and son?
“The birth of Max and Dove!”

Watching my mom become a grandmother to Max and Dove has been one of the most beautiful chapters yet. She pours the same love, energy, and support into them that she gave me—and continues to give me—every day.

This Mother’s Day, I’m celebrating not only the incredible woman who raised me but also all the mothers out there who lift their children up and help them chase their dreams. Thank you, Mom, for being my first cheerleader!

Wishing everyone a Mother’s Day full of love.

With love,
Gray
