How to Remodel a Room on a Budget

How to Remodel a Room on a Budget

While we’ve definitely advocated for a regular room reno here on the blog, we totally understand that we can’t drop tens of thousands of dollars every time we want to swap out our décor or remodel a space. Overhauling even one room can cost quite the chunk of pocket change if you want your décor pieces and your design to stand the test of time, but that doesn’t mean you have to empty your bank account for a remodel.

In fact, making over a space can be more budget-friendly than you might think! Don’t believe us? Keep scrolling and let’s see if we can change your mind…

## Consider the space.

Let us start by saying that the cost you can expect from any room renovation greatly depends on just that—the room. Square footage and amount of work that needs to be done will obviously tip the scales one way or another, so keep that in mind as your planning your remodel. You may be able to totally makeover a small bathroom for just a few thousand dollars, while a kitchen overhaul will likely cost closer to $10K for cosmetic changes like paint, installing a new backsplash, refacing cabinets, and upgrading appliances. BUT, don’t get too discouraged. No matter the room, it’s possible to create the stylish space of your dreams and stick to a reasonable budget.

So let’s get into the details…

## Prioritize out-of-date pieces.

If your remodeling a kitchen, for example, take a quick assessment of what elements are aging your space the most. Things like old countertops and poorly finished cabinets can make your space look 10 years past their expiration date, so focus on those first. Nowadays, you can find countertop materials that look like a million bucks, at a fraction of the cost. Something like butcher block is cost effective and beautiful, but does require a little maintenance. Or, if you’re dying for a clean, white countertop, try engineered quartz or solid surface instead of marble. Marble generally runs at about $100 or more per square foot, while the other two can be found as low as $45 per square foot.

## Take advantage of local resources.

Especially when dealing with stone countertops or tile, seeing what is available nearby can help you save. If there’s a stone supplier in your area, give them a call or visit their lot to see if they have any leftover or less-than-perfect pieces you can get at a lower price.

## Don’t underestimate “budget” suppliers.

With modern trends on the rise, many pieces can be found at your local Target or IKEA that will still look amazing and won’t burn through your budget. Clean and simple is often easier to find at a lower price, so stick with things like modern brass or brushed nickel when it comes to choosing hardware and fixtures. Especially when they’re small details or further from direct view (like ceiling lighting), you can get away with budget-friendly options, and everyone will still be asking where you got them.

## Look for all-in-one packages.

If you’re redoing your bathroom, look for affordable companies that offer vanity packages, including the cabinets, sink, and even the faucet and mirror in some cases. Great low-cost options between $200-$1000 can be found at Overstock, IKEA, and Fresca. So get shopping!

## Ask yourself if replacing is absolutely necessary.

As far as cabinets and vanities go, consider the option of painting instead of replacing. Custom cabinetry can cost a pretty penny, but a simple fresh coat of paint can do wonders to bring your cabinets back to life. And when it comes to your floors, some less-than-great tile or carpet in the bedroom, bath, or kitchen can even be covered up temporarily with a really great statement rug. It may not be a permanent fix for your space, but you’ll be surprised at how it can transform the room until you can save up to fully redo your flooring.

## Sub in subway tile.

Something as simple as subway tile can make a huge difference in the aesthetic of your space, and still keep you within your budget. Not only does it look equally beautiful and clean in kitchens and bathrooms, but it can also be easily customized to suit your space. Try black or dark grey grout to make the tiles more of a statement piece, or stick with pure white for a clean look. Did we mention they also come in matte, polished, and even crackle glaze finishes? Not to mention, the simple size and shape of a subway tile means they can be laid in a variety of patterns from herringbone, to stacked (horizontal or vertical), to classic brick patterns, and more. The possibilities are endless.

## Allocate your budget appropriately.

This comes right back to basic budgeting skills, but it’s an important reminder nonetheless. When redoing your space, make sure you’re allocating your money appropriately. Do your research on what the average cost is on everything you’ll be needing from your space—from paint and appliances, to décor pieces like a new couch or throw pillows—and divide your budget into categories. If you really want to splurge on that beautiful bed frame you’ve been eyeing, then go easy on the expense of bedding and throw pillows. Bottom line? Make sure you’ve decided what is most important to you in your remodel. Some pieces are well worth investing in, while others are better left for the budget-friendly options.

We hope you put these tips to the test, and create the space of your dreams (on a budget, of course!)

Cheers to new, very stylish beginnings… ;)
