Design Q&A with Grapevine Interiors

Q: Tell us a little about yourself!

A: Hi, I’m Louisa Smith of Grapevine Interiors. I joined Tris Nuland at Grapevine almost ten years ago after an early career in finance and the New York art market. Grapevine is based in Duxbury, MA but we do projects around New England, and I now spend the school year in Steamboat Springs, Colorado where my teenage kids ski race and attend school.

Traveling back and forth frequently gives me a lot of motivation and inspiration. When I’m not working on design projects with clients, you can find me gardening, biking, and skiing!

Q: How would you describe your interior design style?

A: We work with clients with different personal styles; the themes that run across Grapevine’s designs are a focus on quality, durability, and timelessness. I love pops of color and the finished room to look fresh but collected and interesting; art and a few antiques can really help achieve that look and feel.

Q: From your color selections to your furniture, can you walk us through your design process? Where do you begin?

A: We start with conversations with the client - what are they really excited about? We share photos, look at materials and options, and usually things will start to head in a direction. From there, it’s our job to help pull ideas together into something really cohesive. We are lucky to have some amazing clients that bring fun ideas and visions to the table.

Q: What’s one of the greatest interior design lessons you have learned throughout your career?

A:  Keep anything structural and permanent classic. Save more daring pops for things that can be swapped out. This leaves you with a great-looking room that you can easily edit over time.

Q: Where do you turn for inspiration?

A: Travel, art museums, auctions, books, Instagram.

Q: Is there a photo of mine from any of my series that you would love to style in one of your projects, if so which one and where?

A: I love your new Mallorca series! I had an amazing trip there with my husband and stayed in the Sentinels at Cap Rocat - it was such an incredible hotel experience.
