Hi Everyone,
The Big Island has always held a special place in my heart — the kind of place that makes you wonder if it’s acceptable to move your entire life into a beach bag and call it a day! It’s where my family and I return again and again, mostly because time moves slower, the ocean looks like it’s been Photoshopped, and the sunsets put on a show that honestly take my breath away.
Last year's trip checked all the boxes: early-morning beach walks, golden-hour chases, and endless “Dad, look at this!” moments courtesy of my kids. Traveling with kids is never boring, and on the Big Island, even the chaos feels charming!
Our Favorite Ways to Explore the Big Island
Whether it’s your first time or your fifteenth, the Big Island has this magical ability to make everyone feel like they’re discovering something new — even if you’re revisiting the same spots. Here’s what we can’t get enough of:
We start most days barefoot — strolling along the shoreline as the sun rises, the kids collecting shells and coral fragments as the waves roll in. Even on the busiest days, these slow mornings feel like a reset button. Then we're off to adventure around the island!
There’s something about a Hawaiian pool day that hits differently. Maybe it’s the palm trees swaying overhead or the sound of the ocean just beyond the edge of the deck. Regardless, it’s the perfect place to unwind with a tropical drink in hand while the kids splash away.
Evenings on the Big Island are pure magic. We love heading down to the beach as the sky turns pink and orange — the kids running around in the last bit of daylight while Jeff and I take in the view. These are the moments I know I’ll remember forever.
Whether it’s shave ice after a swim, a boat day in crystal-clear water, or dinner under the stars, we always find new gems mixed in with our longtime favorites. The island’s blend of luxury, nature, and warmth keeps us coming back.
One of our favorite places on the island is Hualalai — the muse for my latest fine art collection! It’s where we unwind, explore, and create so many of the memories you see in these photos. From the serene pools to the lush landscaping and sweeping ocean views, Hualalai embodies the spirit of aloha in every way.
Whether I’m photographing the scenery or simply taking it all in, this place continues to spark creativity and joy. It’s no surprise that it has inspired my most recent photography series!
If you’re planning your own Hawaiian adventure — or simply dreaming of sun-soaked days by the water — I hope our memories spark inspiration for yours.
Aloha forever,
Gray
