Design Direction: Week 3, One Room Challenge - Challenges

Hi Everyone,

I’m back today with our third round of One Room Challenge updates! In case you’re a little bit behind, let me catch you up. Two weeks ago, I announced that we are redesigning our office space as part of the One Room Challenge. The challenge lasts for 6 weeks, during which I share updates about the project here, on the blog, and on social media. Last week I shared inspiration images for the project, but this week I want to focus on discussing some of the challenges that have made the project a little bit more difficult than desired.

Space

It’s no secret that when it comes to our office, we are working with very limited space. This can make it difficult to have the office organized in a way that’s comfortable for everyone and efficient. We have also been tackling this project during one of the busiest seasons for our office, so between product inventory coming into the office at a rapid pace, hosting our tent sale and trying to get orders out as quickly as possible, rearranging the office and receiving our new decor has been difficult. Up until last week, it felt like there were boxes everywhere. You can see in some of the images above.

Structure

The structure of our office is unique. You will notice in some of the before images that there are three pillars right in the middle of the room. In a perfect world we would be able to have these removed, but since they are weight-bearing that sadly isn’t an option. The pillars divide up the space somewhat awkwardly and provide a lot of restrictions when it comes to office layout. We’ve transitioned our desks to the new layout I showed in last week’s post, but we’re still moving things around and working out the kinks to figure out what will work best for our team.

Lighting

We are really lucky in that our office generally gets a lot of natural light; however, in the winter, when there isn’t as much sun out it can be pretty dark. So, we rely on our overhead lighting to keep the office bright. In the past, we have had track lighting above with sconces along the walls, but this time around we want to find something a little bit nicer than track lighting that still distributes light well. We will show you a little bit more in next week’s update, but we will be partnering with Lamps Plus and Hudson Valley Lighting to tackle our office lighting. I’m so excited to show you what we picked!

With every project comes its challenges, and, as frustrating as they can be, I know it will all be worth it in the end when we have our new space. I hope you’re all enjoying following along. Stay tuned for next week’s updates where I’m going to dive into how we’ve made it all work.

Cheers!

Xx
