Behind the Scenes: The Making of Gray Malin in Aspen

Hi Everyone,

I hope by now you’ve all had a chance to take a look at my Gray Malin in Aspen series, a collection of Aspen fine art photography inspired by vintage, luxury ski culture. This series has been so amazing to create and see come to life. As opposed to most of my series, the turn around time between shooting and releasing this series was extremely fast, but I just couldn’t wait to share these images with the world!

Before we get too far into it, check out the video below to see how the magic happened…

When I decided to create this Aspen fine art series, I set out to capture the feeling of a winter wonderland. If you ask me, each of these photographs makes me feel like I’m living inside a snow globe. What makes this series so special is that I was granted access to exclusive destinations all around Aspen that isn’t given to everyone. It was such an honor to be trusted by the Aspen community to capture their world through my photography. With vintage wardrobe hand-picked by me, classic props, and 1960’s hair and makeup, it’s almost like I traveled back in time to capture the Aspen of yesteryear. Fun fact: there were 47 pairs of vintage skis used! Of all the series I’ve released this one was the most challenging and the most rewarding. I’m so proud of how it came out and hope you all love it too.

The Little Nell was one of the many locations I had the privilege of shooting in Aspen. This shot showcases the glamour of Aspen visitors and sets the tone for the entire series.

One of the biggest challenges of this shoot was coordinating the logistics on the mountain. props and costumes had to be brought up the mountain via chairlift and CAT before and after slopes opened for skiers in order to cause as little disruption as possible.

Shooting at Cloud Nine was, perhaps, the most difficult shot of them all. For those of you who don’t know, Cloud Nine is a popular spot in Aspen for après ski that you can only get to by skiing. Multiple team members had to take ski lessons just in order to get to and from the spot.

This shot at Buckhorn Cabin really embraces the magic of this series. It’s so classic and whimsical. To get to and from Buckhorn Cabin we had to ride in the CAT up an extremely steep slope.

I love sharing these behind the scenes looks with you with each of my series releases. Not only is it exciting giving you a glimpse into how it all comes together, but it’s fun for me to take a look back and reflect on the process. Thank you so much to my team for making all of this happen! It couldn’t have been done without you.

Do you have a favorite print from the series? You can check them all out here.

Cheers!

Xx
