Design Direction: Start With Art - Creating a Perfect Reading Nook with Washashore Home

When the temperatures get cooler there’s nothing that sounds more appealing than snuggling up with a cozy blanket and a good book. In this week’s Start with Art feature, Peyton and Sarah from Washashore Home are showing us how they styled Wood End Lighthouse, Cape Cod in a Beach House project, and created the perfect little reading nook to transport you back to Summer. Check out all their tips below…

We are Peyton Lambton and Sarah Waldo, both “Washashores” to Cape Cod (hence our name!). Peyton moved to the Cape from Tennessee after meeting her husband, a local Cape Codder. Peyton got her start in interior design through her TV work with HGTV and DIY before joining forces with Sarah in 2017. Sarah graduated from Parsons School of Design and found her way back to the Cape—where she grew up—and splits her time between the ocean air and the mountains of Vermont. With the creation of Washashore Home, we bring a fresh, modern take to New England interiors. A coastal home should have an ease about it: it should call for company—then simultaneously welcome them with familiarity and surprise them with the unexpected.

How would you define your interior design style?

We love designing livable, authentic, coastal, modern spaces. We want the rooms to feel comfortable, fun and easy to be in. We love finding unexpected pieces that are conversation starters and become family favorites.

What drew you to the Wood End Lighthouse print?

We immediately loved the Wood End Lighthouse print because of its bold color mix. The blue of the ocean and the seagrass in the dunes contrast beautifully with the bright sand. We also love the shape of that stretch of beach—having a seascape that isn’t a horizon line is so unexpected and interesting!

What did you pick out as the most important elements of the print to incorporate into the space?

When designing beach houses, we steer away from going overly kitschy; keeping the paint colors and bedding neutral allowed the photograph to be the statement piece. This is a bunk room, so we brought in a bit of whimsy with the window treatments.

What’s one piece of advice you’d give to someone who wants to design a space and start with art?

Let the art do the talking! If you find a piece you love, go neutral with the big pieces in the space so that your eye will immediately dive into the art. Add styling pieces (like pillows, books, poufs) that pull out your favorite details in the piece; we loved highlighting that tiny red roof in the lighthouse cottage, and bringing in red books on the bedside shelf made that detail pop!

There’s nothing like a piece of art reminiscent of the beach to make the chilly months more bearable. Bring home a does of sunshine with art from graymalin.com.

Keep up to date with Peyton and Sarah on Instagram and on their website.

Cheers!
