As much as we love our neutrals (what looks fresher than white on white?), there’s something about pops of color that just make our hearts happy. For this week’s Start With Art feature, interior designer Lucy Williams is showing us how she added pops of her favorite color, orange for a room that feels bright and homey. Keep reading for Lucy’s tips!

Hi, I’m Lucy! I grew up the youngest of three girls in Richmond, VA. My fashion designer mom was definitely an inspiration, and as a result, I was obsessed with creating new things! Whether it was drawing or painting, rearranging my room, or sewing a new outfit, I kept myself busy! After graduating with an art degree from the University of Georgia, I moved to NYC to work for Sotheby’s. I eventually migrated to pursue work in interior design in Charleston, SC, Denver, Co, and finally landed in Norfolk, VA. My husband and I are raising two teenage boys and couldn’t be happier enjoying the coastal living lifestyle in Norfolk, VA!

How would you define your interior design style?

I’d describe my design style as "comfortable coastal" with a hint of sophistication. I like spaces that feel comfortable for everyday living, but worthy of adult entertaining. I love using art / photography to dictate the color scheme of a space. For this reason, I try to keep my furnishings pretty neutral with pops of color to compliment the art.

What drew you to The Lifeguard Stand, St. Tropez from Gray’s À la Plage series?

I fell in love with the composition and the color scheme! I really gravitated towards the neutral blues, the whites, and then that gorgeous pop orange! Orange is my favorite accent color! The natural frame adds a nice organic component. I knew this photo could work well in lots of different spaces and I’m a big fan of versatility.

I don’t know about you, but we’d love to curl up in that cozy chair with a good book and pretend we’re at the beach. Is there a space in your home that could use a pop of color?
