For this week’s Start With Art, we’re introducing you to interior Designer, Katie Davis. We love how Katie used ‘Sunbathing Beauties’ from Gray Malin at the Coral Casino to bring vibrant color and contrast into the space. We’re so excited to have Katie on the blog today sharing her tips for decorating and why she loves starting with art!

Hi everyone, I’m Katie! Growing up in Houston, I was always inspired by the way that my mom created a home that was always ready to welcome guests with an inviting, yet sophisticated atmosphere. Over time, my mom taught me to appreciate quality furniture, fabrics and materials. I eventually fell in love with the nuances of design after my family undertook a major remodel of our family home. Throughout the process, I watched my mom work with an interior designer to develop, coordinate, and implement their shared vision for our family’s home—an imaginative and collaborative process that still resonates with her today.

I attended the University of Texas to pursue a degree in Public Relations. Following college, I went on to attend South Texas College of Law in Houston, where I met my husband, Billy. Though I spent several years as a practicing attorney, my love of interior design never left. As a hobby, I assisted friends, family members, and colleagues with a variety of design projects ranging in scale. Over time, I realized that interior design was my true passion and, with the support and encouragement of Billy, I decided to start Katie Davis Design.

Now, I have the joy of working alongside and guiding clients through the interior design process to merge their dreams, her passion, and the collective vision into the reality of beautiful and vibrant living spaces.

How would you define your interior design style?

At Katie Davis Design, we take on more of a new traditional style, mixing modern lines with traditional elements to create our design aesthetic. We love anything woven, so we always incorporate a piece here and there!

What drew you to Sunbathing Beauties from Gray Malin at the Coral Casino?

I love anything with contrast and the photo has an incredible array of colors that really pop and draw life from the image. I also loved how the attire gives a nod to days of the past - I find myself really drawn to vintage pieces!

What did you pick out as the most important elements of the print to incorporate into the space?

For this particular space and print, the colors were the most important. We were in love with the grasscloth piece from The CEH and liked the green-blue colorway, which perfectly complements the photo. When you find a photo so rich in color, it’s really important to draw from that element and use other pieces that complement and highlight the art rather than distract from it.

What’s one piece of advice you’d give to someone who wants to design a space and start with art?

Art doesn’t have to match everything perfectly! We always want the color to coordinate and work together, but it’s okay to mix a more modern piece of art with a more traditional room, and vice versa. Our main thing that we tell clients is to find art that they really love and are drawn to - something that makes them smile or reminds them of something special. Art is so personal and it’s really important to take the time to find the perfect piece.

Now it’s your turn! Bring some summer into your home with a new piece of art and enjoy free shipping on all photography this week only. Stay up to date with Katie on her Instagram and website.

Cheers!
