Hi Everyone

I hope you've all had a chance to explore our Free Framing and Shipping promotion on graymalin.com. I wanted to share a beautiful home tour to help you narrow down your decision. I always love to see how others style my art in their homes, especially when their style is so different than my own. Today, we're visiting the office and guest home of Marie Flanigan of Designs by Marie Flanigan, in Houston Texas. I'm so thrilled Marie was willing to take the time to share her displays with all of us. Without further ado, let's get started!

Tell us a little bit about yourself. How did you get into interior design and do you have a specialty?

From an early age, I've had a passion and love for design. I started my career as a classically trained and practiced architect. However, I found myself wanting to be a part of projects beyond just the architect's role. At that point, I transitioned my career to residential interior design and am so fulfilled by the amazing projects I get to be a part of. My knowledge of architecture certainly plays an important role in my approach to interior design.

How would you define your interior design style?

My style could be seen as a new traditionalist. I fully embrace the beautiful and time-honored elements of interior design but also love to push classical boundaries. That said, I enjoy the different perspectives that each client brings to a project. I am always excited to try new ideas and explore design.

We are so honored to have a piece from Gray's collection in our new office. [“Disco Ball"](https://www.graymalin.com/photography/disco-ball) is proudly displayed in our library and as soon as I saw it, I knew it was the perfect piece for that space. I was drawn to “Disco Ball" because it's such an architecturally interesting shot. From the starkness of the Salar de Uyuni salt flat to the sharp angle of the disco ball's shadow, it beautifully encompasses Gray's one-of-a-kind perspective. I was also drawn to the vibrant colors of the piece and loved learning that the color temperature nears 7,000 kelvins, which makes objects appear brighter than normal.

What did you pick out as the most important elements of the print to incorporate into the space? (ie color, texture, etc)

We want our library to be an inviting place that lends itself to collaboration and inspiration. I picked “Disco Ball" because I think it's the kind of art piece that sparks creativity. “Disco Ball" is Gray perfectly merging the natural world with manufactured objects. The juxtaposition of the salt flat and disco ball pushes boundaries and I want my designers to use that as inspiration to push their designs forward.

Yes! I have another Gray Malin print in my guest house. When I designed this space, I wanted it to be a perfect escape for our house guests. My goal was to give them a calm and serene spot to unwind and the “Aquinnah Kayaker, Martha's Vineyard" Gray Malin print was a perfectly relaxing complement. Like most people, I've spent a lot of time working from home over the last year and a half, so now I get to enjoy this piece more often!

What's one piece of advice you'd give to someone who wants to design a space and start with art?

Art is such an important component of what makes a house a home. If you're designing a room around a piece of art, start with your color palette. What colors compliment your artwork? Should you keep your palette neutral to draw the eye to the artwork or does a more vibrant palette serve to enhance the piece? These are important questions to consider. Also, make sure that your artwork is placed where it naturally serves as a focal point of the room.

Marie, thank you again for sharing your beautiful space with us and taking time to share about your office and guest home, life, and career. Make sure to stay up to date with Michelle by following her on Instagram and checking out her blog.
