Tips & Tricks: How to Pick the Right Lighting For Your Home

Today’s post is all about the one thing that will make or break any room in your home: lighting. When you’ve decorated your home to perfection, harsh overhead lighting simply won’t cut it, so we asked interior designer Gillian Segal to share her expert tips for finding the right lighting for your home. Keep reading for all her tips for a well-lit space…

When it comes to selecting light fixtures, I always remind my clients that lighting is the jewelry of the home. Whether it’s a dramatic statement piece or something more restrained that helps to harmonize the space, good lighting is always a great place to invest in. Not only can the sculptural body of a fixture provide a great focal point, but the light emitted greatly contributes to the overall ambience of a space. The added bonus? These beautiful works of art hang far out of reach of destructive forces that can cause wear and tear to your decorative investments (toddlers, pets, guests—I’m looking at you!).

Like many special purchases however, the selection and considerations can be confusing and overwhelming at times—so here is my designer’s guide on how to pick the right lighting for your home.

1. Investigate the source of light (the bulb!)

This may sound silly, but it’s easy to get wrapped up in the beauty of a fixture without considering some of the basic practical elements. Look at the light bulb: is it exposed or covered? If it’s covered, by what? Think of what the implications of this may have on your space. If you want to create a warm inviting glow in your dining room, but select a fixture with directional and opaque shades, you will be unhappy with the harsh and pointed light the fixture produces. Something with a glass diffuser or canopy would be a better solution.

HOT TIP: You can also affect the “warmth” or “coolness” with the color temperature of the bulb—this can make a huge difference in how the light feels! A 2700K bulb will feel more like a traditional incandescent (warm), where 3000K+ will feel much cooler. If you are sensitive to light color, try to keep all your fixtures with the same colored bulbs for consistency. Also be sure to look at the light output (wattage or lumens) to ensure this fixture can provide the strength you need.

2. Think about scale.

When shopping for lighting and placing it in your home, it is so important to consider the shape and scale of the fixture and the height of your ceilings. A few general rules to live by:

Think about your ceiling height! Adding a high fixture to a space with low ceilings will emphasize the lack of height and make things feel crowded. In this scenario, a low, wider fixture would be most flattering. Conversely, having something small or short in a space with cavernous ceilings will dwarf the light, making things feel out of proportion.

Consider the hanging height. While there are exceptions to every rule, a general guiding principal I like to follow is this: for an 8’ ceiling, there should be between 30-34” between the table and bottom of the fixture. For every additional foot in ceiling height, add 3”. In other areas (where fixtures are not hanging over a table or island) ensure you have enough room for your tallest guests to comfortably walk under.

3. To mix or not to mix?

One question I commonly receive from clients is, “is it OK to mix finishes?” My answer is always a resounding YES! If you have chrome hardware and fixtures throughout your home but want brass or black pendants over your island, go for it! Mixing finishes is a great way to create a layered look that always feels warm and eclectic to me.

Are you planning on switching up your lighting soon?
