Design Direction: How to Nail the Global Décor Look from Home

byTeam GM

It’s easy for us to say that we love the global décor trend when we’re rubbing shoulders with Gray (a.k.a. jetsetter extraordinaire) on a daily basis (and even assisting on his work trips from time to time...hi, Bolivia).

But let’s be honest—hopping on a plane to an international destination is likely not on most people’s monthly, or even yearly, agenda. That said, we’ll let you in on a little secret… We’re firm believers that you don’t actually have to travel to get that well-traveled look in your home. In fact, authentic global décor handmade by artisans around the world can be discovered (and purchased!) right from the comfort of your couch—and today, we’re here to tell you exactly what it is, how to find it, and how to style it in your space. So keep scrolling to nail the global inspired décor look from home, and you’ll have all your guests asking where you went on your latest travels…

Learn What to Look For

When it comes to finding global décor online (or in-store), there are generally two routes to consider—authentic handmade goods created through fair-trade practices and recreations sold commercially in stores. If you’re opting for authentic goods made by artisans internationally, keep in mind that the price tag may be slightly higher, but for good reason! Artisan-made goods are made with love and care (as well as incredible skill), using high-quality materials and age-old methods. However, if you don’t have the pocket change for authentic pieces in every corner, there’s no shame in mixing and matching with some commercially made global inspired décor too. We won’t tell!

Search the Right Shops

As the consumer, it is important to seek out ethically sourced goods when shopping for authentic pieces, in order to support fair wages and proper work conditions for the artisans who created them. When in doubt, look for the fair-trade stamp anywhere you shop, and don’t hesitate to ask questions before buying! The philosophy, mission, or simple “about” section of any shop can be incredibly telling when it comes to how they source their goods, and most fair-trade shops will also highlight their artisans and/or factories so you can see exactly who made your décor. Some of our favorites are The Little Market, The Citizenry, Parachute Home, and Equal Uprise, and even larger names like West Elm carry a selection of handmade goods from around the world.

Mix with Up-to-Date Décor

Of course, selecting the right global décor for your space is only half of the equation… How you style it is just as important to pull off the global décor look, whether those pieces are from your own travels or just from your online shopping spree. ;) Our top tip for maintaining that “collected” look while keeping things up-to-date? Mix with modern décor! Even if your style isn’t overtly modern per se, displaying that hand-carved object or woven textile with contemporary furniture can elevate a space, while giving it depth and interest. Say it with us: balance, balance, balance.

Display an Inspiring Scene (or Two)

You know we can’t resist bringing a wanderlust-worthy print into any space, but when it comes to nailing that global décor look, artwork is essential. Whether you opt for a hand-painted portrait or landscape from across the globe or a stunning photo from far away travels, you really can’t go wrong. Or better yet… why not go for both?

Here are some of our favorite pieces of global décor from around the Web, so get shopping…
