Design Direction: 3 Ways to Elevate Your Halloween Décor

byTeam GM

We’re suckers for Halloween, and we have to admit, we might love dressing up our décor even more than we love dressing up ourselves. On the other hand, we personally think that some Halloween décor trends have had their time in the sun and should R.I.P. Don’t get us wrong, we love reveling in the spirit of Halloween with spooky cocktails, ghoulish get-togethers, and inspired costumes, but when it comes to our décor for the month of October, we like to keep things chic.

Dress Your Table Accordingly

If you ask us, Halloween is all about entertaining. It’s the kickoff of our favorite end-of-the-year holidays, which means gathering with friends and family and celebrating the season—no matter which holiday is taking center stage! That being said, an easy way to dress up your Halloween décor without getting cheesy is swapping out your daily dishes and linens with more chic, Halloween-appropriate dinnerware. Tip: We love the look of rich colored goblets in October, so stock up!

Update Your Color Scheme

Just because Halloween is known for its infamous black and orange combo, doesn’t mean your space has to be decked out with black bats and orange jack-o-lanterns. Instead, try shifting your décor color scheme to something a little more unexpected, that still fits with the spookiness of the season.

Tip: Our favorite is the bold combo of classic black and white, with pops of one of the lesser-used Halloween hues, like a deep red or rich green. (When in doubt, stick to the basics! Gray, black, and white make for a surprisingly chic and spooky look.) This is also a great time of year to scoop up all those matte black pieces you’ve been eyeing—we think there’s something undeniably alluring about those matte black accents…

Make the Outdoors Shine

Since Halloween is all about inviting guests over and trick-or-treaters coming to your doorstep, don’t neglect the exterior of your home when going for an elevated fright-night look. Try taking a less literal approach (i.e. nix the zombies and blood) and instead incorporate more natural elements, like bare branches, dim warm light, and pumpkins dressed up in an elegant or unique way.
